Top tips for having the ideal home office
With more and more people now working from home, here are our 5 top tips to make the most of working from home in terms of your space and surroundings.
Depending on your home and its layout, available space and who else lives and works with you, an important decision to make, is where you will work?
1. Where?
Is there a dedicated room you can use? Or will you use part of another room. Things to consider are access to sockets, phone lines, broadband quality, natural daylight and so on. Consider your view also, as you will be spending a lot of time in there, daily. The ideal thing is to have dedicated space so you aren’t packing up every morning and evening. But if this isn’t an option, you can get foldaway desks.
Also consider the background and surroundings, if you will be spending a lot of time on calls online/Zoom.
2. What?
What will you need in this new or temporary working space? A chair and a desk to start with. Consider the size in terms of the space and therefore what will fit it or not. Consider the usage eg will you need a desk big enough for two screens or one? Will you need a chair with flexibility to support any aches and pains you may suffer with?
Will you also need storage or filing options or accessories like monitor arms, cable tidies and so on?
Will you need somewhere to house a printer and office supplies?
3. Who?
Who can help you design this space or get the layout right? We can help and would be happy to advise you and your colleagues who are working from home.
Who else will be using the space? Do you need to share it with a partner working from home or perhaps the children with weekend homework? If more than one of you will be using the space then you may need to invest in furniture that is adaptable or easily changed around.
4. How?
As you are going to be spending a lot of time in this new found space, make it your own. How? Choose the chair and fabric to match your brand or favourite colour. Add a plant or two to cheer up the space or even divide up the space. Use a comfortable mouse mat or keyboard and get some office supplies in that will be useful like pens and paper, highlighters, wall charts and so on.
5. When?
No one is quite sure how long they will be working from home for or when they will return to the office or if they will be finding a new normal or combining the two places of work, but now is the time to make these changes for your productivity, comfort, safety and environment.
