When a desk is more than a desk – our guide to desking

Desks first appeared in the late 17th century (the 1600's) as bureaus (a sloping front desk in which the writing surface can be opened and closed) and further research says the world’s first standing computer desk was invented in 1998.
The word "desk" originated from the Modern Latin word desca "table to write on", from the mid 14th century. This blog looks at the types and purposes of the varying desks found now in today’s changing workplace.
General office desks
Wave, bench, radial or standing? These are all types of desks for the workplace, school or office. Each have their features and benefits and are all suitable depending on your requirements and needs. These needs may be ergonomically based, material based, size/space based, budget based, or usage based.

Meeting room/conference room desks and furniture
Meetings are back and happening across workplaces for 1 or many staff. But what about the type of desk or table in the room? Size is a factor and how many people this needs to sit. Gaps or port holes and areas for AV and IT equipment needs to be factored in. Find out more

Sit to stand desks
Then there are sit to stand desks or standing desks to consider of course. These are the most flexible in usage allowing the user to stand or sit depending on their comfort and the work they are doing. We have been told and learned a lot over the years about the impacts on our physical, and mental, health of sitting for prolonged periods of time. Being on your feet the whole times isn’t ideal either, so a combination of both has been proven to have great impacts. Sitting and standing used to be done by a few, but this way of working is becoming more and more mainstream.

Reception desks
And finally, there is the original reception desk to think and talk about. The reception area is often the first impression a visitor, staff member or client gets to see physically when arriving at an office or workplace. And we all know first impressions count.

Staying with reception desks and their surroundings, do they still have their place in today’s new look/hybrid workplace?
We say yes, very much so. We all know the way we work and where has changed, but what are the differences between what reception areas used to have and what they now have and look like?
Some workplaces have made no changes to their reception areas and some have made changes eg less leaflets or racks or clutter or by adding in hand sanitiser stations and taking away water machines/coffee machines. Some are staffed still, and some aren’t manned but using automated ways to check in instead. We appreciate a non staffed reception Is cheaper to run, but many of us still want that personal touch and friendly smile when visiting an office or workplace and long many the reception area continue in its original form. And not forgetting your reception area also provides valuable desk and working space for one or more employees.
